Pat Buchanan: His Quote on Black America

Pat Buchanan:

First, America has been the best country on earth for black folks. It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known.

Wright ought to go down on his knees and thank God he is an American.

Second, no people anywhere has done more to lift up blacks than white Americans. Untold trillions have been spent since the '60s on welfare, food stamps, rent supplements, Section 8 housing, Pell grants, student loans, legal services, Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credits and poverty programs designed to bring the African-American community into the mainstream.

Governments, businesses and colleges have engaged in discrimination against white folks—with affirmative action, contract set-asides and quotas—to advance black applicants over white applicants.

Churches, foundations, civic groups, schools and individuals all over America have donated time and money to support soup kitchens, adult education, day care, retirement and nursing homes for blacks.

We hear the grievances. Where is the gratitude?

Barack talks about new "ladders of opportunity" for blacks.

Let him go to Altoona and Johnstown, and ask the white kids in Catholic schools how many were visited lately by Ivy League recruiters handing out scholarships for "deserving" white kids.

Is white America really responsible for the fact that the crime and incarceration rates for African-Americans are seven times those of white America? Is it really white America's fault that illegitimacy in the African-American community has hit 70 percent and the black dropout rate from high schools in some cities has reached 50 percent?

Is that the fault of white America or, first and foremost, a failure of the black community itself?

First off, and I hate to say this - there is some truth in what he's saying... it's just about the absolute most racist way of saying it, however.

Have 'caucasian' Americans been discriminated against? Yes! Certainly. Affirmitive action is discrimination against us, based on our race, holding good jobs for minority races over caucasians. That's discrimination, period.

Is it right? No. The law is wrong. It needs to be changed.

The rest of Pat's tirade is a myriad of stereotypes and ignorance, supported by statistics that, while accurate, fail to address the issue. We have a huge segment of our population falling through the cracks. Throwing money at it won't fix it. We need to take comprehensive action to correct this aggravating problem in our society. I don't know how to fix it. I only recognize it is a problem.

I agree, but that is not my question.

Racism may, in some instances, be necessary, and would therefore be right.

I personally don't agree with it, and it is illegal in this country to a degree, but I will not say that anything is always wrong no matter what.

I got this reply for this post in my email. I am reposting it here, as it is pertinent to the post, and because I like their blog. :)

I wanted to comment on one of your posts but I can't seem to figure out my google crap. Here it is in case you're interested and want to post in in comments:

Sorry, I have to disagree with at least part of your post, Sacrilege. It's not discrimination to try to level the playing field. Maybe as a white male it's hard to see; but without AA the white male power structure would have no reason to go outside their comfort zone. Hell, even WITH it there remains an undeniable advantage for your class. Even in major, Fortune 500 companies like Xerox, promotions and simple job offers fall disproportionately to white males. I know. I worked there for 8 years and in my last three years there, literally every exempt position that was filled in my division in NJ was filled by a white male. . . and virtually all of them "buddies" of the highest level white male in our office.

Every person promoted to a management position during that period was also a white male as well.

The ironic thing was that the top person was a white woman - but she sooooo wanted to be "one of the boys" that she let her subordinate choose her candidates.

So, though Affirmative Action may seem unfair to you, if it truly hurt the entrenched class you would see a majority of women and/or Blacks in positions of power. Look around corporate America and stop the whining.

Lucille,

Ironically I worked in a very different workplace from your own. At Intel, the company openly favors minorities and women, especially for the purposes of hiring. I remember my interview. As I was walking out from my own interview there was an engineer walking out from his interview and the interviewer told him simply, "Everything looks good, but in all honesty, if you aren't a woman or a minority you need to have a 4.0 gpa to get hired here."

My two cents.

It's also worth noting, while I'm 'whining' that my boss at Intel was South African, my trainer was mexican, my plant manager was puerto rican, my shift manager was a black woman, and my assigned engineer was a mexican woman.

So, yes, Xerox is breaking the law. However, a law that requires a certain number of women and minorities but makes no requirements on the number of caucasian males is racist and sexist. It may be necessary, but it is racist and sexist. I don't doubt that some companies in this country break the law in regards to how they hire, however, we have civil action that can punish them for it.
